Profitability

Growth is terrific, but it must be balanced with expense to reach profitability. If your company struggles to make a profit, you have two options: cut expenses or raise revenues. Developing strategies around this is one of a CFO’s most important functions.

It starts with discipline. This industry historically has been very highly levered. After we completed our integration with Northwest [Airlines] in 2009, we started a process of improving the health of the balance sheet and shoring up our resources.
